Bronx Emergency Asthma Management (B.E.A.M) is administered by SOBRAP and
represents collaboration between Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center Emergency
Room and Pediatric Department, Visiting Nurse Services of New York (VNSNY),
Health People, and Healthy Nest. The purpose of this initiative is to
“support the delivery of effective and efficient clinical care and
self-management, including case management services for high-risk children
and families.” (NYSDOH).
The project aims to identify poorly managed asthmatic
children who frequent the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center’s Emergency
Department and refer them to an all-inclusive home intervention program.
After identifying at-risk children, home visits are primarily made by VNSNY
but also by Health People and SOBRAP staff. Home interventions include
evaluation for triggers, a referral for Integrated Pest Management services
if indicated, education in the home regarding medications and
self-management, and, if necessary, case management.
The overall goal of BEAM is to reduce the number of
emergency room visits due to asthma and provide the education and recourses
to proper asthma management.

the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center
“ A Zone of Asthma Education”
Better Breathing in the Bronx is a
collaborative project designed for schools and communities that combines the
educational programs of Health Plus, Asthma Free School Zone, NYC DOE and
accepted school asthma education curricula. This project was designed by
the SOBRAP School Education Working Group.
By combing resources of several community
organizations, asthma has been and will continue to be addressed from an
environmental, educational and health perspective while creating a “zone of
asthma action and awareness” within and surrounding each school involved in
the program. The purpose of this project is to target and educate children,
parents, school faculty and staff, and community members about asthma and
asthma management.
The goal of this project is to reduce asthma-related
school absences, to provide school nurses with the means to treat their
students’ asthma and allow them to return to class and to provide all school
staff, students, parents and community agencies surrounding the school with
the knowledge and ability to control and manage asthma.
