What is SOBRAP?
In January 2004 the South Bronx Asthma Partnership
(SOBRAP), with Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center as lead agency, was funded as
one of nine (at the time) New York State Department of Health Regional
Asthma Coalitions. The overall mission of SOBRAP is to decrease the burden
of asthma in the South Bronx specifically by decreasing the number of
Emergency Room visits, hospitalizations and missed school days.
SOBRAP is a coalition of South Bronx agencies,
including health-related, social service, educational, faith-based and
environmental, who have joined together to tackle the issue of asthma in the
South Bronx. SOBRAP supports a number of projects each geared to providing
asthma-related education or services to the South Bronx community.
Recipients of these services include children and families with asthma,
providers of asthma care, and community groups.
Why the South Bronx?
Highbridge-Morrisania, Crotona-Tremont, and Hunts
Point-Mott Haven combined comprise a population of 500,000 people including
160,000 children. An estimated 41,000 children (25%) have asthma.
Asthma-related emergency visits in these neighborhoods are dramatically
higher as compared to New York City and over all New York State rates.
Who joins SOBRAP?
SOBRAP members include representatives of city and
state government and health agencies, community-based organizations,
corporations, social service agencies, hospitals, clinics, environmental
groups and others.
SOBRAP Working Groups
The South Bronx Asthma Partnership is made up of a lead
agency, a steering committee and working groups that focus on specific areas
that impact asthma and asthma-related services. Working groups include:
Community Education, Clinical Issues, School Education, and Environmental
Education.
